Road Trip: Meridian Eats: Weidmann's

I decided to take a quick trip home yesterday and before I left, my mom and I went to Weidmann's for dinner. If you have never been/heard of Weidmann's, it is a Meridian landmark. Opened in 1870, the restaurant is the oldest in the state of Mississippi and became one of the most well-known restaurants in the state as well, famous for its black bottom pie, peanut butter crocks, and numerous pictures hanging on the walls.

The famous peanut butter.

Mom and I both started with Caesar salads.

Delicious! Very fresh, tasty dressing, and plenty of parmesan. A steal for 2.95.

I chose the shrimp and grits.

Sadly, I was unimpressed. The shrimp was tasty and well cooked, but the grits lacked flavor. Butter, salt, and better cheese would have done wonders for this dish. They seemed to be orange grits with no taste whatsoever. Finally, the cream on top of the shrimp was too thick...more similar to a thick gravy than a cream sauce.

Mom had the chicken bolognese with Cajun cabbage and au gratin potatoes.

She said the chicken was good, the potatoes were ok, and not a fan of the cabbage (to be honest, I don't know why she ordered it, she doesn't even like slaw).

While it was a disappointment this time, I've had good meals here before. I hope that it was just an off night or maybe I should order something other than grits.
